Northland Medical Museum
Eclectic collection of medical instruments, anaesthesia pieces, nursing notes, general equipment, photographs, memorabilia and some archival material. Dr John Swinney began saving outdated hospital heritage pieces some 30 years ago. The original collection has since been aumented with equipment from other Northland hospitals, local GPs and some pieces from outside the area. Some old items sit beside their modern counterparts. Currently, most displays are within Whangarei Hospital, but the tip of the iceberg can be viewed at The Cottage.
The museum itself, formerly located in Hospital Rd, Whangarei, has now relocated to Heritage Park in larger premises. Although the museum has thousands of objects, including John Swinney's original collection, it is always looking for additional instruments (old and current) and health care memorabilia to expand display opportunities and themes.
