Nuuk Art Museum
Nuuk Art Museum is a national museum in Greenland, located in Nuuk, the capital. The museum contains a notable collection of paintings, watercolors, drawings, graphics, figures in soapstone, ivory, and wood, with many items collected by the businessman Svend Junge.
The museum consists of an impressivecollection of Greenlandic art and crafts from the beginning of the 20th century with approximately 300 paintings and 400 greenlandic figurines.
The museum has two sections consisting of the museum’s own paintings and a new extension to the building with a large exhibition room which houses temporary exhibitions from Greenlandic artists as well as artists from around the world.
The museum is a gift from the deceased Svend Junge and his wife Helene to the town of Nuuk. The museum is characterized by the fact that the art exhibited is a private family’s collection – the close-hanging paintings and the small corners in the building carries a homely atmosphere.
