Castle of St. George in Lisbon
Castle of St. George (port. Castelo de São Jorge) - a fortress within the boundaries of Lisbon, the historical core of the city. The castle is located on a high hill and is visible from almost anywhere in the city. The place on which the castle stands was fortified from antiquity and served as a fortress to the Romans, Visigoths, and then the Moors. Here was the residence of the Moorish emir. Historic Lisbon in the Moorish period developed on a steep slope between the castle of St. George and Tagus, later this area was named Alfama.
