Samsun Archeology and Ethnography Museum
Archeology and Ethnography Museum, located in the Fair Area of Samsun city center, was opened to visitors on May 19, 1981.
The artefacts from the excavations carried out by the Turkish Historical Society in Samsun region were sent to the Kastamonu Museum due to the absence of a museum in the province. The establishment of a museum under the name of “Atatürk and the 19th May Museum” was proposed to the Ministry in 1956 by the governor Turgut Baskaya. . In the meantime, the works from a construction base and the works collected from the environment were collected at the Samsun Male Art Institute and taken under protection. Work started on 1 March 1960 at the museum, which was originally a warehouse. After that, Governor Enver Saatçigil reconsidered the idea of Atatürk Museum in Samsun, and in 1967, the 19 Mayıs Gallery within the Fair Area was transferred to the Ministry of National Education for use as the “Atatürk Museum”.
