This year at the Art Institute of Chicago, from May 15 to September 5, you can visit one of the most beautiful art exhibitions on our list: Cezanne.

Who?

Paul Cezanne is a great fan of Post-Impressionism.

What is Post-Impressionism? Post-Impressionism, a term coined by art critic Louis Leroy in 1887, was the first of the modern movements to feature dynamic, light-filled and emotional works.

Artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin and Georges Seurat took Impressionism to new heights with brighter colors and less detail.

These artists rejected realism and focused on expressing their feelings through colors and shapes. Among the most famous works is "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" by Georges Seurat.

The movement is characterized by bright colors and bold lines or brushstrokes that can still be seen in canvas paintings today. They are often categorized with other movements such as Impressionism, Expressionism, Symbolism, Cubism, etc.

They can be considered an extension of Impressionism, and their goal is to create more intense colors and more expressive brushstrokes. The Post-Impressionists expanded Impressionism by using lighter colors, applying new layers of paint without "underpainting" (drawing), and adding strong outlines in dark colors. The painters who practiced this technique were concerned with expressing their personal reactions and (often uncontrollable) feelings.

The Post-Impressionists were more experimental and embraced new styles such as pointillism and abstract art. The movement first emerged in France, where it consisted of artists who wanted to continue the ideas of the Impressionists, but take them to a new level and make them all they could be.

What made Cezanne so popular that he went from being associated with France to becoming a world-famous artist? Is it our innate willingness to reach for light and warmth? Is it the irresistible spirit of France? Is it Cezanne's extremely serious approach to craftsmanship, which required Herculean effort and the courage to go even further than the post-impressionists and achieve the ultimate synthesis of all dimensions and aspects of painting such as light, space, depth and shading?

Find out in Chicago (May 15 - September 5, 2022).
